Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Texas Laparoscopic Consultants offers advanced procedures to treat painful hernias. Surgery is often necessary to alleviate hernias, and we are able to offer a laparoscopic option that safely treats hernias effectively with faster recovery and less visible scarring.

What is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an organ or part of tissue pushes through the muscle, usually abdominal muscle. This happens when the muscle is weakened and it often results in a visible bulge. Hernias can occur in various places in the body, but are most common in the groin and abdomen. If left untreated, a hernia can cause increasing pain and discomfort; it can also become “strangulated” which can have life threatening results.

What causes a Hernia?

  • Heavy strain on the abdominal wall
  • Injury near hernia site
  • A surgical incision near the hernia site
  • Persistent harsh coughing
  • Strain during bowel movements
  • Aging
  • Overexertion from lifting heavy objects
  • Some hernias are present at birth.

Hernia Treatment

Medication can help ease symptoms, but there is no medicinal way to cure or repair a hernia. Surgical treatment, however, has proven a safe and effective hernia treatment. Hernias typically get worse without treatment, and if they become “strangulated” will require emergency surgery and can cause serious medical complications.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Hernia surgery is a very common procedure, but many surgical hernia repairs are performed as traditional open surgeries. Dr. Yu and Dr. Scarborough are highly skilled in laparoscopic technique and they are able to perform a more minimally invasive hernia surgery with several benefits to the patient.

  • Shorter surgery time
  • Less visible scarring
  • Quicker recovery period
  • Less post-operative pain and discomfort

What to expect from Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Surgery is performed under General Anesthesia through a very small incision. The surgeon inserts a surgical camera to view inside and then repairs the hernia and encases it in special mesh material to prevent reoccurrence. After the surgery, the patient will experience soreness, but medication will be prescribed to alleviate pain. Normal day-to-day activities will be able to resume shortly after surgery, and a follow up appointment will be scheduled within two weeks.
