Meet Dr. Sherman Yu
Sherman C. Yu, MD, FACS.

Dr. Yu is committed to restoring health and well-being to his patients. With over 8,000 bariatric procedures and more than 6,000 advanced laparoscopic surgeries performed, he offers an entire spectrum of weight loss options including non-surgical treatments and minimally invasive techniques.
A Houston native, Dr. Yu earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin before receiving his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he served as Chief Resident, and went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.
Dr. Yu has been recognized as a Centers of Excellence Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation and has also been named one of America’s Top Surgeons by Consumer’s Research Council of America. In addition to his clinical work, he has served as Assistant Professor of Surgery and held multiple leadership roles, including Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery and Weight Loss Program and Section Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Park Plaza Medical Center, as well as Chief of Staff at Townsen Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Yu believes that every person deserves the chance to live a healthy and active life, and he has made it his life’s mission to help patients achieve sustainable weight loss and long-term health. His expertise also includes advanced laparoscopic procedures such as gallbladder removal, hiatal hernia repair, and inguinal hernia repair, allowing him to deliver safe, effective, and personalized care.

Education & Experience
Dr. Yu earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with high honors. He went on to receive his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he also earned honors in his surgical training.
He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where he earned the title of Chief Resident in Surgery. During this time, Dr. Yu authored multiple research publications and presented at national conferences, contributing to advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Upon returning to Houston, Dr. Yu completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at University of Texas Health Science Center, where he was actively involved in surgical education and training the next generation of surgeons.
In 2008, Dr. Yu co-founded Texas Laparoscopic Consultants alongside Dr. Terry Scarborough. He has since dedicated his career to bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, continuing to contribute to research and innovation in the field while delivering advanced, patient-centered care.
