Meet Dr. Terry Scarborough

Terry Scarborough, M.D, FACS

Dr. Terry Scarborough has dedicated his career to helping patients live healthier, happier lives. With over 10,000 bariatric procedures and more than 9,500 advanced laparoscopic surgeries performed, he is widely recognized as a leader in laparoscopic surgery, having performed thousands of procedures since 1999.

Dr. Scarborough has been honored with awards from a number of organizations, including the Consumer’s Research Council of America, which named him one of America’s Top Surgeons. His approach to surgery is informed by his commitment to comprehensive care and his expertise in advanced, minimally invasive techniques.

He earned his medical degree from the University of New Mexico and completed his surgical residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Scarborough has served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School and has contributed to numerous publications and national presentations in the field of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.

Education and Experience

Dr. Scarborough hails from Clovis, New Mexico and graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico, where he earned his Bachelor of Science. He went on to receive his medical degree, also with honors, from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

He completed his surgical residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he received extensive training in advanced and minimally invasive techniques. During his early career in Albuquerque, Dr. Scarborough performed the first laparoscopic kidney transplant in New Mexico, demonstrating his commitment to surgical innovation.

Dr. Scarborough later served as a faculty member and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School, where he also played a key role in laparoscopic surgical training and education. After completing advanced training in laparoscopic gastric bypass and bariatric surgery, he co-founded Texas Laparoscopic Consultants in 2008 alongside Dr. Sherman Yu.

Throughout his career, Dr. Scarborough has remained dedicated to advancing minimally invasive surgery and improving patient outcomes through both clinical excellence and surgical education.
